Course Overview: Privacy and Confidentiality for Support Workers
This course provides essential training on privacy and confidentiality within the context of support work, ensuring all staff understand their responsibilities and how to apply best practices in real-life situations. It begins with Module 1, which introduces the concepts of privacy and confidentiality, helping learners distinguish between the two and recognize how they apply in day-to-day support roles through relatable examples.
Module 2 explores the legal and ethical obligations of support workers. It offers a clear overview of the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs), the NDIS Code of Conduct, and the lawful responsibilities placed on support staff when handling participant information.
In Module 3, learners gain practical guidance on how to safely manage client information. This includes tips on securely storing both physical and digital records, safely transporting sensitive information, obtaining informed consent before sharing data, and understanding when it’s appropriate to share details based strictly on a “need-to-know” basis.
Module 4 focuses on maintaining professional boundaries, especially in casual settings. Topics include the risks of discussing clients in public places like cafés or cars, the inappropriate sharing of names, photos, or stories in group chats or social media, and how to respond when a participant discloses private information about someone else.
Module 5 addresses digital privacy and record keeping. It covers how to use tools such as Bamboo Care software securely, manage work-related communication on personal devices, implement safe password and log-out practices, and write professional, respectful shift notes and support logs.
Module 6 prepares learners for potential privacy breaches. It discusses common examples of accidental breaches, the correct procedures for reporting them to a manager, how to issue apologies if necessary, and the potential consequences of serious or repeated violations. The module also encourages the development of a workplace culture that prioritizes confidentiality.
Finally, Module 7 wraps up the course with a summary of key takeaways, space for learners to offer feedback, and a final quiz and certificate to assess and confirm understanding. This course ensures all support workers are equipped with the knowledge and confidence to uphold privacy and confidentiality standards in their professional practice.
