Respiratory Care and Infection Prevention

Course Objective:

The Respiratory Care and Infection Prevention course is designed to empower support workers, community nurses, SIL staff, and coordinators with foundational knowledge of the respiratory system and its importance in disability and aged care settings. Through easy-to-follow modules, learners will gain a clear understanding of how the lungs function, how to recognize signs of respiratory distress, and why respiratory health is crucial for vulnerable individuals receiving care.

This course also provides practical training in identifying and managing common respiratory conditions such as asthma, COPD, pneumonia, COVID-19, and influenza. Participants will learn how to safely observe breathing patterns, use pulse oximeters, respond to breathing difficulties, and support registered nurses during oxygen administration. Special focus is given to identifying early warning signs like wheezing, cyanosis, and shortness of breath, allowing timely escalation and response.

Infection prevention is another key focus, ensuring that learners can apply standard precautions like hand hygiene, PPE use, environmental cleaning, and outbreak response. The course aligns with NDIS Practice Standards, Aged Care Quality Standards, and WHS regulations, helping ensure safe care practices across all settings. By the end of the course, participants will be better prepared to protect both clients and themselves while supporting respiratory health with confidence and competence.
