Course Objective: Managing Choking and Dysphagia
This course is designed to equip disability support workers, nurses, SIL staff, and coordinators with the essential knowledge and practical skills to safely support participants with swallowing difficulties (dysphagia) and respond effectively to choking incidents. Through alignment with NDIS Practice Standards and the IDDSI Framework, learners will gain a deep understanding of how to identify signs of dysphagia, follow safe mealtime practices, implement risk-reduction strategies, and deliver prompt emergency care when choking occurs.
The course also reinforces accurate reporting and documentation practices to ensure mealtime safety plans are regularly updated and shared across the care team. Upon successful completion, participants will feel confident in supporting mealtime safety, using modified diets appropriately, and acting quickly in high-risk situations to protect the health and wellbeing of individuals in their care.
