Course Objective – Medication Handling and Administration

This course is designed to equip disability and aged care support workers with the knowledge and practical skills required to safely support clients with medication management. Participants will gain a thorough understanding of the legal and professional boundaries, various medication types and forms, and the importance of following the 6 Rights of Medication Administration. The course will also ensure learners can accurately document, identify and respond to medication errors, and follow correct storage, handling, and disposal procedures in compliance with NDIS Practice Standards, Aged Care Quality Standards, and relevant state/territory medication guidelines.

By the end of the course, learners will be able to:

• Understand the risks and responsibilities involved in medication support

• Recognise different medication types, routes, and high-risk categories

• Apply the 6 Rights of Medication Administration consistently and safely

• Support safe and hygienic administration practices

• Accurately document and escalate medication incidents or refusals

• Contribute to a safer care environment through proper handling and reporting
