This training is designed to equip Disability Support Workers with the essential knowledge and practical skills to safely support participants who rely on Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG) feeding.
You will learn the fundamentals of enteral feeding, the purpose of PEG feeding, the equipment used, methods of administering feeds, and the important role you play in ensuring participant safety, dignity, and wellbeing.
The course also explores common risks and complications, plus your responsibilities in PEG tube and stoma care as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
By the end of this course, you will be able to:

Explain Enteral Feeding

Define enteral feeding and why it is used to maintain nutrition and hydration.

Identify participants who may require PEG feeding.

Understand PEG Feeding

Describe what PEG feeding is and why it may be prescribed.

Recognise the key equipment used, including gastrostomy tubes, syringes, feeding pumps, and giving sets.

Administer PEG Feeds Safely

Identify the different methods of PEG feeding (bolus, pump/continuous, gravity).

Outline safe steps in preparing, administering, and completing a PEG feed under supervision and according to care plans.

Maintain Participant Safety and Comfort

Follow hygiene and infection control protocols.

Monitor participant positioning during and after feeds.
-
Respect participant dignity and preferences throughout the process.

Recognise and Respond to Risks
-
Identify risks and complications such as blockages, aspiration, infection, dislodgement, or skin irritation.

Describe immediate actions to take and when to escalate concerns to Registered Nurses (RNs) or medical professionals.

Support PEG Tube and Stoma Care

Understand daily care requirements for PEG sites.

Recognise signs of infection or irritation.

Document and report observations accurately as part of care team responsibilities.
