Course Objective: Understanding Dementia and Related Care
This course equips support workers, coordinators, nurses, and lifestyle/day program staff with the knowledge, skills, and compassionate approaches needed to provide high-quality care for individuals living with dementia. By completing this training, learners will:

Understand Dementia Fundamentals

Define dementia and differentiate between common types (Alzheimer’s, vascular, Lewy body, frontotemporal).

Explain how dementia affects brain function and distinguish it from normal ageing.

Debunk myths and stereotypes to foster respectful, person-centred care.

Recognise Symptoms and Behaviours

Identify key symptoms (memory loss, confusion, mood swings) and behaviours (wandering, aggression, repetition).

Adapt responses to fluctuating symptoms, ensuring safety and dignity.

Support Daily Living and Independence

Apply strategies to assist with meals, hygiene, and mobility while preserving autonomy.

Use redirection techniques and structured routines to reduce distress.

Communicate Effectively
-
Practice calm, clear, and validating communication (e.g., avoiding correction, reading non-verbal cues).

Tailor interactions to the individual’s emotional state and cognitive abilities.

Manage Responsive Behaviours Safely

Recognise triggers (e.g., overstimulation, unmet needs) and follow Behaviour Support Plans (BSPs).

De-escalate agitation using trauma-informed approaches.

Create Safe, Supportive Environments

Adapt physical spaces (lighting, signage, furniture) to minimize confusion and risks.

Implement safety measures for exits, medication, and wandering.

Collaborate with Families and Professionals
-
Communicate sensitively with families about changes or concerns.
-
Work alongside RNs, GPs, and OTs to deliver holistic care.

Uphold Compliance and Best Practices
-
Align care with Aged Care Quality Standards and NDIS Practice Standards.

Document observations and follow organisational policies (e.g., incident reporting).

Outcome: Learners will demonstrate competency through scenario-based assessments, enabling them to provide dignified, evidence-based care that enhances quality of life for individuals with dementia and their families.
