This course is designed to equip disability support workers with the knowledge, skills, and mindset needed to deliver culturally responsive and inclusive care. Through a series of structured modules, learners will explore how culture, identity, and disability intersect, and understand the importance of cultural competency within the context of NDIS and Aged Care standards. The course encourages respect for individual backgrounds, values, beliefs, and communication preferences, helping support workers provide services that honour each person’s unique story.
Participants will gain a deeper understanding of how to work effectively with people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. The course covers key areas such as cultural safety, working with interpreters, accommodating faith-based needs, and recognising the influence of family roles. Emphasis is also placed on inclusive communication, challenging unconscious bias, and fostering a culture of respect in the workplace.
By the end of the course, learners will be able to reflect on their own values and attitudes, commit to ongoing cultural learning, and apply practical strategies to ensure inclusive, person-centred support. The final assessment and learner reflection will consolidate their understanding, preparing them to confidently support individuals from all walks of life with empathy, dignity, and cultural sensitivity.
