The Safe Mealtime Practices for Support Workers course is designed to equip disability support workers, community nurses, SIL staff, and coordinators with the essential knowledge and practical skills to provide safe, respectful, and dignified mealtime support. Through structured modules, the course emphasises the importance of nutrition and hydration in overall wellbeing while upholding client choice, cultural preferences, and safety.
Learners will explore key areas such as identifying mealtime risks (e.g., choking, aspiration), supporting texture-modified diets based on the IDDSI framework, applying safe food handling practices, and recognising and responding to swallowing difficulties like dysphagia. The course also highlights person-centred mealtime support techniques, documentation standards, and clear communication with allied health professionals and families.
By the end of the course, participants will be confident in applying safe mealtime practices aligned with the NDIS Practice Standards and Aged Care Quality Standards. They will be better prepared to support individuals with varying needs, reduce mealtime-related risks, respond appropriately during emergencies, and maintain accurate records, ensuring that every mealtime is not only safe but also enjoyable and empowering for clients.
